Every web site on the World Wide Web, including
this one, has to be stored some place on a computer that's connected
to the internet. 'Hosting' a web site means storing it on one of
those
hard drives
in a way
that your web browser can find it. So
every time you look at a web page you're downloading files
from that computer.
When
you think how many web sites there are on the Web, then we're
talking about an
incredible number of computers and a crazy
amount of electricity
to keep them running 24 hours a day all year round.
This web site is hosted at Ilisys,
a web-hosting company in Perth, Australia. Ilisys uses
100% renewable
energy to power their
data
centre and headquarters. Renewable energy is electricity generated
without carbon emissions, using sources like wind and solar.
Ilisys also plants trees through Carbon
Neutral to offset carbon dioxide emissions from
staff travel.
Here's a link to the information about this stuff at
the Ilisys web site.
While I'm at it, my website does
not use 'cookies' and none
of my jokes are tested on animals.
